This is my personal perspective. Every composer has their own approach, so please take this as a reference.

If you work with DTM (music production), you’ve probably thought this at least once:

“Maybe my sound would improve if I had better plugins…”

On social media and YouTube, you constantly see things like:

  • “This plugin is the best”
  • “Use this and you’ll sound professional”

But here’s the conclusion:

Adding more plugins will not significantly improve your sound.

In this article, I’ll explain why from a composition and arrangement perspective.

Why Do We Keep Buying Plugins?

There are some common reasons why plugins keep piling up:

  • Everyone else is using them
  • Professionals recommend them
  • You feel like something is missing

One of the biggest misconceptions is this:

“You think your sound is lacking because of your plugins.”

But in most cases, the real issue lies somewhere else.

Why More Plugins Don’t Improve Your Sound

1. The Sound Is Decided Before Plugins

The quality of your track is mostly determined by:

  • Sound selection
  • Melody and phrasing
  • Arrangement
  • Frequency balance

If these aren’t well-structured, adding plugins won’t fix the core problem.

You’re just processing something that’s already weak.

2. Most Plugins Do the Same Job

EQs, compressors, reverbs…

They all serve similar fundamental purposes.

Yes, there are subtle differences, but those differences are:

just the final few percent.

If your foundation isn’t solid, those differences won’t matter.

3. More Options = More Confusion

When you have too many plugins:

  • You hesitate on which one to use
  • You keep tweaking endlessly
  • Your decision-making slows down

As a result:

both your speed and quality can actually decrease.

Real-World Usage

I own a full bundle like Waves Mercury,
and also use some UAD plugins, FabFilter Pro-Q 3, and Plugin Alliance tools.

However, in actual production, what I use is very limited:

  • Waves plugins
  • A few UAD plugins
  • Pro-Q 3

Even if you own a lot, you end up relying on a small set.

Also, many professional engineers I know still use older versions of plugins
and don’t constantly switch or collect new ones.

Of course, it depends on the person, but one thing is clear:

Having more plugins is not what makes the difference.

Personally, I’ve found that:

Mastering one ecosystem is more effective than using many different brands.

When you deeply understand how a tool behaves:

  • You make faster decisions
  • You reduce hesitation
  • Your results improve

What Clients Actually Care About

Here’s an important point:

Clients do not care what plugins you use.

They care about:

  • Is it easy to listen to?
  • Is the balance good?
  • Does it match their vision?

Details like which EQ or compressor you used:

are almost never noticed.

That’s why what truly matters is:

overall balance and musical design—not the tools.

What You Actually Need

In many cases, this is enough:

  • EQ
  • Compressor
  • Reverb
  • (Optional) Delay

The priority should be mastering these tools.

Adding more plugins before understanding the basics
will only slow you down.

If You Still Want to Buy Plugins

Plugins themselves are not bad.

The key is timing and purpose.

When to buy:

  • You clearly understand what is missing
  • You have a specific goal

Avoid buying just because “it looks good.”

How to choose:

  • Check if your current tools can already do it
  • Once you buy, commit to learning it deeply

It’s better to go deeper than wider.

Conclusion

Plugins are useful tools, but:

more does not mean better.

Instead, focus on:

  • Arrangement
  • Sound organization
  • Balance

These directly impact your results.

Plugins are just for finishing touches.

What matters is not:

“What you use”
but
“How you use it.”

And one more thing:

Owning plugins does not mean using them effectively.

If you’re going to invest money,

it’s often better to invest in sound libraries rather than more plugins.

Final Thoughts

In my production work, I focus on:

  • Clean sound organization
  • Thoughtful arrangement
  • Sound design tailored to purpose
