I Believe Social Media Dependence Is Dangerous

— Using It Is Fine, Depending on It Is Not —

In recent years, social media and online platforms have become essential tools for work and communication.

I personally use them as well—for visibility, networking, and attracting clients.
There’s no doubt that they are powerful tools.

However, at the same time, I strongly believe:

👉 Becoming dependent on them is dangerous.

In this article, I’ll explain why, based on what I’ve seen and experienced.

External Platforms Are Not Your Assets

First, it’s important to understand this:

👉 Social media and platforms don’t belong to you.

No matter how many followers you gain or how much content you build,
you are still operating on borrowed space.

The Risk of Sudden Service Shutdowns

I’ve actually seen people struggle when:

👉 A platform they relied on suddenly shut down

All the content they built,
their audience,
their accumulated work…

Gone, or significantly diminished overnight.

This isn’t a rare case—it can happen at any time.

Policy Changes Can Destroy Your Business

Platforms can change:

Terms of service

Algorithms

Monetization rules

…at any moment.

And when that happens:

👉 Users have little to no control.

For example:

Your reach suddenly drops

Your income stream changes or disappears

Your account gets restricted or suspended

These are real risks.

Social Media Won’t Last Forever

It’s easy to think:

“This platform is popular now, so it’s safe.”

But history says otherwise.

There was once a dominant platform called mixi in Japan.
It was incredibly popular.

Today?

👉 It still exists—but it’s no longer relevant for most people.

This shows one important thing:

👉 Popularity does not equal permanence.

The same could happen to any current platform.

Dependence Leads to Instability

If your work relies entirely on:

Social media

A specific platform

External systems

Then your business becomes unstable.

From my perspective:

👉 Being controlled by platform changes is not a stable position.

And more importantly:

👉 Clients may feel uneasy about that.

They might think:

“Will this person still be reliable if the platform changes?”

(Of course, this is just my personal view.)

Using Platforms Is Smart—Depending on Them Is Not

To be clear:

👉 I am not ضد social media.

In fact, it’s extremely useful for:

Gaining visibility

Reaching new audiences

Showcasing your work

It’s a powerful entry point.

The Importance of Owning Your Base

That’s why I believe this is key:

👉 Use platforms as entry points, but build your own base

For example:

Your own website

A blog with your own domain

Email lists

These are:

👉 Assets you control

Conclusion

Social media and platforms are convenient and powerful—but they come with risks:

Service shutdowns

Policy changes

Declining popularity

That’s why:

👉 Use them, but don’t depend on them
👉 Build something you truly own

That’s the strategy I believe in.

— Using
